KAYAKING AND CANOEING ON THE BUFFALO BLUEWAY
The Buffalo Blueway offers an amazing kayaking and canoeing experience for paddlers of all ages and abilities. We invite residents and visitors to explore the river as it meanders its way through an urban but surprisingly natural landscape with astounding sights around every bend.
WHY YOU SHOULD PADDLE THE BUFFALO BLUEWAY
You’re paddling through history
The story of the Buffalo River is the story of Buffalo’s history. The river’s path follows a stream that was carved during the time when the Haudenosaunee (Seneca) people had stewardship over the land. You’ll also see world-famous grain elevators and historic bridges—symbols of Buffalo’s industrial might.
Nature is all around you
Though the Blueway is an urban water trail, you’ll be amazed by the natural beauty as you paddle alongside beavers and geese, hear the rattle of a kingfisher and see deer on shore. Paddling in a globally significant bird area, you’ll see lots of birds!
A restored river and improving economy
Launch from and paddle by restaurants, residences, parks and other business that have been created where there once was just industrial blight. You can watch people and all different kinds of boats, from kayaks to battleships.
Proximity and accessibility
The Blueway is close to many neighborhoods—downtown, the Old First Ward, The Valley, South Buffalo and Kaisertown—and is just a short trip away for many residents. For visitors, the Blueway is right off of the NYS Thruway and only 30 minutes from Niagara Falls.
Your health
Paddling is a great workout that can improve cardiovascular health and increase muscle strength and flexibility, all with a low impact that reduces wear and tear on tissues and joints. It can also be very calming and meditative, leading to stress reduction!
